Oil on Linen

Maple Shadow  Frame

This is an Original Oil Painting

I did a whole series of lights on mountains in the snow lastt winter and a couple of them came with me to my summer studio to be finished. This is one of them. This painting is so nuanced that I can almost tell you who lives in what neighborhood and the circular drives and tucked in areas are all a way of story telling in my mind. It probably doesn’t look like that to anyone else, but when I paint these scenes the lights just have a story behind them.

I was that kid that played with Barbies. I made houses for them and they had very nice houses made out of books opened and leaning on each other to make whole houses. it is relatable because when I get into these paintings it is like you just use your imagination. I don’t work from references, I just make the frontage road, then I make the main street and then the road coming away from town usually has a gas station or a convenience store ( more yellows, more reds) and it is a version of make believe. The snow and vantage point gives me the abstraction I need to create something out of nothing and that is the beauty of oil painting for me.

This piece is more blue than grey. The texture of the paint enables me to almost carve out the roads, like deep snow does in nature letting a lot of the canvas tint through.
