Maple Shadow Frame

The Apartment building is always fascinating to me to see on a walk or from a car at nighttime . The scenes give a comfort to me, the fact that the windows are full of people just going about their evenings. These paintings were a series I started last winter and I wasn't sure where I was going with them. The idea for me was when I walk on a cold night and the windows of the buildings or homes are cozy and warm inside. The end result of these pieces are, to me, a moment in time. It is, as a painter, like creating a doll house with regard to rooms and colors and people. I don’t work from references and I think it makes for a more imaginative end result. Inventing is what is so appealing to me and giving each apartment a story. Like being a writer with paint.

It has been so interesting the reactions to these works. I heard Rear View Window from one group, or peeping Tom (not a peeping Tom) from another but to me they are just an abstracted view of people. And the warmth and comfort of home.
