Oil on Canvas

Maple Shadow Frame

This abstracted flower painting was one of the last ones I did before this show. The more I did the paintings the more just pure color theory they became. These have colors stacked on colors and the whole image was just focusing on color and design. I love the small flowers on the bottom scurrying across the bottom of the canvas.

I spend 6 weeks painting 4-6 hours a day when I am there and it leads to dramatic shifts in what I paint to have all that time in the studio. It is not easy running Nimrod (an artist workshop retreat) but it is the unbroken time, year and year, that keeps me coming back. My work just leaps because of having that time instead of just meandering along. I have been doing that 23 years and every single year I see a great deal of difference in what I am painting when I get there and what I paint when I am leaving. This painting was one in the series that just happened organically from being immersed for so long in these works. This work is one of using design and freedom to just make things work for my eye. It is a great big statement piece that is the way I feel about these works.
