This is an Original Painting

12 × 16

Oil on Linen

Maple Shadow Frame

This painting is in my studio right now and makes me smile every time I see it. I don’t; leave finished oils in my tiny little studio but move them to the large one in my house, so that says a lot. I love this little happy painting.

I will go a long time between painting still lives. I taught for over a decade for the VMFA studio school and still life was all I could really set up for my class so I did so many that I kind of moved away from them when I stopped having to create one 3 times a week! These new still lives are thickly painted and totally invented and as an oil painter, pure fun to work on. This one is thickly painted and some of the paint is literally casting a shadow and I am working on many more of these now. One of my absolute total art crush loves is Wayne Thibaud. He was the first artist who I read about who admitted he did not, in fact, sit in front of a huge row of cakes or pies every time he painted them. Because he knew how to paint them because he is a painter. If you’ve been painting for 35 years you have a lot of memories to draw from. Definitely look him up if you like my work and you’ll see how much better he is than me, lol, but also the influences.
