Oil on Canvas

Maple Shadow Frame

This piece is one I did from a photo I took when I was running one morning in Carytown, a boutique shopping area in RIchmond, VA where I live. I was struck by the cool blue colors in the water the waiter was using to clean the outdoor patio area and the bright reds of the umbrellas and the cool shadows on the buildings behind. As with every painting, I left out as much as I have painted, making a very abstract approach to a pretty action packed scene.  I can look at this piece and still smell and hear the Spring day when I was so mesmerized by that scene and  can still hear the breakfast noises of the french bistro opening for the day. When I paint this kind of painting, I get to relive that day and moment over and over and that, in a nutshell,  is why I ever choose to paint anything.  This painting is big but the planes and colors of it are fairly unbroken so it can handle hanging in a smaller space. I liked it in both places but it could also handle a much bigger wall (although I don't have one to display it that way, sadly) .
