Oil on Board
I did a series of paintings inspired by and sort of of a nod to one of my favorite local Richmond painters, Bill Fisher, who died this past year. I have two of his large works I see multiple times a day and they constantly keep me amused, entertained and most important to me, interested. On one of the pieces I have of his, Bill used a stencil to isolate a phrase and so despite the painting being very abstract there is a very distinct, almost signage wording he had painted on the piece that looks as if it were stenciled. This summer, I ran across a homemade rough cut stencil made of plywood in the wood shop at Nimrod and immediately thought of Bills work and I did a series of paintings from it. This was one the earlier ones, and smaller, but the paintings have so many layers that in person it is almost humming. It is a personal piece but I think it goes beyond the words and just works as a painting.
